If you are in a time crunch, either of the two other answers (craigslist or ebay) are good solutions. However, both sites have scams and other risks involved when using them so be sure to check their help and safety/security pages before purchasing and remember that REALLY if it sounds too good to be true, it IS. The scams are successful because nice people fall for them all the time.

With Hertz there is no particular time. Hertz runs their vehicles to approximately 30,000 miles. Most of their cars are turned back in to the dealer, some are released to the Hertz car sales lots, and others to a local auction. One thing for sure with a Hertz car is that they have been maintained. The Hertz computer system will not let employees rent out vehicles which need oil changes, have engine lights on, etc. and they always replace with new model year vehicles once the mileage cap has been reached.
Usually late Aug which is the best time to buy the previous year models because they are trying to get them off their lot.
It actually depends on the model. I don't know about Honda, but with Toyota, I think the 2008 Corollas are arriving at dealerships soon if not already, where as the Sienna, I THINK the new ones for those come out in November or December. Just call a dealership and ask (don't give your number or they'll keep calling you asking if you want to come in and look at one :P)





EDIT: Nascar24, that article you posted is a year old. Every Toyota owner I know is happy with it, and we've owned quite a few. No problems at all. My friend just bought a Honda, he's had to take it to the dealer for service 3 times since he bought it 2 months ago. Not saying Honda is bad (they're actually pretty good), just that JD Power ratings don't mean jack. They gave CHRYSLER an award for best in initial quality or something on the Caravan; most piece of crap van ever.

Ive been lookin for a beater to fix and drive since i dont have alot of money, but it seems like alot of them are being sold without titles. Is it easy to get a title for a car like these? What I assume is that you are looking at really old cars that maybe have been sitting for a long time. What you need to do is get the serial number and get the DMV to search their files. That should tell you if there are prior owners or more importantly liens. If there is no record found you can try to register it as a no title car. If there is a record you need to try and contact the registered owner. If you can not find him then you need to do a lien sale. Just pretend the car has been abandoned on your property and go from there. If the seller is the registered owner then you can get him to sign a request for duplicate title form and transfer it with that and a bill of sale.

68 is an excellent choice. It has most of 67's bugs worked out and they still didn't make a boatload of them like they did in 69 and they had those cool little Chevy bowtie side marker lights...





The only problem with your request is the five-speed; There was no such animal. Of course you could throw a five-speed in one, it just wouldn't be restored to factory specs.
Good Luck! In 1968 they only built 7,200 of them. Not sure how many are still around. I had a 68 convertable SS that I sold for 30k and today is worth about 50K.





Maybe you should look for a 1969 Z28 they built 20,000 of those. Still a rare find.

Craigslist is far and away the best.





Ebay has VASTLY improved their search in terms of searching geographically. (There are still some problems with narrowing searches...like you can't browse a category and then narrow the search with keywords...because the keywords will actually EXPAND the search) So that's actually an option for NORMAL cars now.





Kijiji.com is kind of like Craigslist, but more flashy, and less popular.

Why would you want a Police Car?
Using the word ';good'; makes me wonder if you have thought this out. Police/sheriff/state patrol cars are not retired in ';good'; condition, rather, they are ';thrashed';. If you want a police car for its performance for an inexpensive price, you will be putting much more into it to get it road worthy than if you took a similar car and put a persuit engine in it. If you are dead set on getting one, check ebay and type in your states name, and many states ebay their old patrol cars, as do many municipalities (police and sheriff). Not many sell direct to the public any more.
Check with the local police department and highway patrol for the specifics on when they replace their old vehicles. Don't forget that they've been used pretty hard ....Good luck!

Why , when looking at an ad for a used car do they say that it has p/steering?. When is the last time a car was made without it. I can understand if it was an old car but I see it on ads for newer cars a lot. Is it just to make a lame car seen nicer by listing something that a car should have anyways? two reasons,





1. the car they are selling doesnt have any other good options so they resort to power steering or stuff that all modern cars have.





2. They use a VIN decode software to come up with a list of options, the VIN decode comes up with a list of standard equipment, but isnt smart enough to realize things like power steering or power locks on a BMW is no big deal. it just spits out what comes up first.Whats with car dealers and their ads(the magazine with local dealers and their cars for sale)?
actually not all cars have power steering as standard equipment. very small/ cheap econo-boxes dont have it.

There are always more cars online. Look at it this way, every single car that is in the book is already online, sometimes for a few days. You are wasting money buying the book twofold. Firstly, you dont need it, secondly you may call up for cars already sold before publication. There is also an option to advertise online only so some cars may never appear in the book. With all the search criteria online its much better. ie, distance from your address, age of car, colour, engine type or size, price range.
Well of course there is as they can up date their website daily, where as the magazine is weekly.

I would go with a government auction all the way - or a police auction. Check out GovernmentAuctions.org for some great deals on surplus and seized cars. Those cars are as cheap as your run of the mill used cars and are probably in better condition.

Many cars in Oregon are for sale with ';Salvage Title';. What does this mean? Can I drive it, license it, insure it? Oregon cars for sale with a Salvage Title?
A salvage title means the car was damaged beyond what it's worth. it would cost too much to fix. That means even though it was rebuilt to run again, it will never run the same. You'll have problems all the while you own it. And not just minor things. You could have engine, transmission, steering and suspension problems forever. And you'll have a very hard time selling it because most people won't go near a salvaged car.





And you should check with your insurance company because most of them now won't cover salvaged cars anymore. There's far too much liability with them and they don't need the headache and ulcers they cause. Oregon cars for sale with a Salvage Title?
A salvage title car for sale in the state of Oregon may've been a car brought from another state, the owner may've applied for a salvage title from Oregon after the car was rebuilt. Is the car being sold as wrecked or has it been rebuilt? If it's the latter make sure it was rebuilt by a reputable mechanic. It may be best to go to your local DMV and have them do an inspection with the VIN # to find out the history of the vehicle.


Also, many times you will find salvage titles for sale being sold as is, meaning you can purchase it and have it rebuilt yourself or they're selling it as is for parts, meaning you can use the good parts from the vehicle to rebuild another car (or truck).


If you know what you're doing you can get a really good deal with salvage cars. I would not recommend purchase a car that has had flood damage as it will have electrical issues and rust problems.


I personally own a rebuilt salvage title car, I've had it for over 7 years now and it's been a great vehicle. I purchased it from a man who buys salvage titles at auction and rebuilds them so they are legal again. This car had some body damage on the side of it, he repaired it so it looked and drove new again.


Keep in mind a salvage title car doesn't mean it's worthless, it only means the insurance company didn't feel it was worth it to repair so they claim it as a total loss. They usually base this on what the market value of the car is and if the cost to repair it is too much then they'll salvage it rather than pay the repairs.


If you're thinking of purchasing a salvage title car that has been rebuilt, find out the history of the car. Check with your insurance company before buying to make sure it's ok. Mine didn't have a problem (Grange ins.) Also keep in mind the resale value is far less then a car with a clean title so if you're going to buy one plan to drive it til it's dead.

Hey welcome to the club. Your best bet is to come to a meeting and ask around. There are not very many out there. I guess it really depends on what you want to race. Check the site for club meetings. Most other Hillclimb clubs in the country are on Tarmac and the cars aren't really built for what we do. Or post a want ad on the club site.

If you have the cash to purchase this car, hit the used car managers of dealers near you, you are the holy grail of buyers--one who is actually looking for a manual transmission, these are generally just dead as far as wholesale goes and somewhat hard to retail. tell them you want to buy it with a drive first. I know I let sales persons put together used car buyers and new car trade-ins to help consummate more sales. I also like the suggestion that you go talk to your preferred dealership used car manager. IF they do not have what you need, they will bend over backward to bring in business.
Auctions and repo sites are your best option given your budget. Assuming you're looking for a short-term car, pick one that hasn't done too much road time yet and it's engine / carb is in relatively good condition. Insist on inspecting the car yourself and take it for a test drive.

I think a Honda civic or accord will do the trick for a very economical car. Anything more than 4 cylinders will suck alot of gas especially if you commute many miles.

Check out the gov't web site for customs and excise as they have some info. Also there was a japanese-canadian business group that would have loads of access to info you want.





You'll have to be careful as many vehicles not already imported do not meet canadian saftey standards so special permits etc will be required.





There is a company that imports the Citroen Dave 6 for canada. Talk to them about the problems with doing this as they now have loads of experience and tell you all the pitfalls.

The website appears legit. You may actually get a good car that you can pay to repair and still be ahead.





However, four warnings:





First, most such cars go to a body shop that specializes in fixing wrecks and reselling them. They will be able to fix them cheaper than you can, and will out bid you. If you outbid them, and then pay retail for the fixes, you will loose.





Second, you have no idea how much it will cost to repair the car, as you have no experience doing this. It is possible that you can buy a drivable car that has only cosmetic damage cheaply enough that you won't mind driving a wrecked car, since a lot of older cars get totaled by relatively minor cosmetic damage. If you are looking for a really cheap driver, and you don't mind a crunched fender or two, check out the site.





Third, if the car is mechanically sound but crunched, you will be bidding against salvage yards that can sell the engine, the transmission, air conditioning compressor, transfer case, glass, etc. In many cases, a wrecked car has parts value several times what it is worth as a transportation vehicle.





Fourth, and final, keep in mind that the car you get will have a ';Salvage'; title, making it very difficult to sell in the future, even after it has been fixed up.





So, if you plan to drive the car in to the ground, and don't mind a bent car, you may find a real bargain. But, forget buying one and fixing it up. You will be for big trouble.

try craigslist, its like a newspaper for online, craigslist.com.. then select your state then city of choice, then type in the car your searching for, if not then try cars.com, its another site that has all used cars listed, its more detailed but both are reliable.. maybe carmax.com? if your looking for estimates, then goto msnautos.com, it will have a kelly blue book value listing and reviews for all cars, specs, and all. All of those sites are pretty good, good luck..

I'm guessing you mean hybrid cars. To my knowledge, there are 8 hybrid cars and 5 hybrid SUVs available today in the US, and only one of them, the Toyota Prius, is not availiable as a regular gas-only model.

Toyota Prius is a great car -- roomy and lots of gadgets and easy to see out in front and a camera to check for backing out and up ---- this car is normal and the gas mileage is fantastic...
How about the Toyota Prius? It's actually pretty cute..but that's my opinion.
Tesla Roadster, this is the best looking electric car i've come accross. Its the first performance, good looking all electric (using a litium ion battery),the car is capable of speeds of over 100 mph 0-60 in about 4 seconds and can travel over 200 miles per charge. The body is bassed 70-80% on the Lotus Elise (meaning it uses certain body panels from the car) pure electric, and the first good looking, not stand out kinda car like other electric and most hybrid cars (ie Prius ew!). So far from what i've heard its between production and limited release (meaning they are taking orders and gettin ready to start saleing them). As they put it, they are accepting reservations for 2008 model year. I've seen two in person so far and they are nice, here is the link, check it out.
There's the Rav 4 EV...looks just like a normal Rav4, but with an electric motor. Good luck finding one, though. They go for upwards of $60K at auction.





I'd recommend a Honda GX...also looks like a ';normal car.'; It runs on the gas that comes out of your stove, costs you $3-6K at an auction, puts out fraction of the pollution of a regular car, and the fuel costs a little over $1 per gallon equivalent.
No, and I don't think they are for everyone just yet...better do your research...what about a hybrid instead?
yup I know what your saying,anything full electric out there looks like a bad prop from a b sci fi movie, or a souped up golf cart, just hang in there someones bound to figure it out sooner or later,and hopefully the price will go down
