Go to your local car auction. For my First Car, I went to the Pennsylvania Auto Auction and bought a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer with 2,300 Miles for $4000 from Enterprise Rent a Car because it was in a light fender bender. I bought it, spent $200 on a new bumper, and it lasted fine.

You can get a good, reliable low priced car from a car auction. They usually have a couple for under $1,500.
